McDonald's franchise owners in California are closing two locations due to the recent minimum wage hike targeted at the fast-food industry. Franchise owner Scott Rodrick attributes this decision to cost pressure faced by his business following the increase.

In a separate development, McDonald's is set to extend operating hours at most U.S. locations this summer, following a decision to hire more than 300,000 workers. The franchise intends to keep stores open until midnight or later, with some exceptions, to cater to customers' late-night cravings.

"Our fans know there's no better way to end an unforgettable night than by enjoying their favorite McDonald's order," the company stated. "As the summer season begins, we're excited to offer more opportunities for customers to satisfy their late-night desires with extended hours and a wider variety of choices."

McDonald's will offer free McCrispy Strips to 1,000 winners from a virtual giveaway on Instagram this weekend. Additionally, merchandise and gift cards for free McCrispy Strips will be distributed to concert-goers in Los Angeles, New York City, and Detroit on the same day.

The extended hours follow McDonald's announcement earlier in May that it plans to hire up to 375,000 workers across the country this summer – a move described as one of the company's biggest hiring pushes in years. The chain aims to add 50,000 new locations by 2027, which represents an increase of 900 restaurants over the next two years.

Concerns over the financial burden of the wage hike in California have led some fast-food chains to accelerate the adoption of automation, such as kiosks and digital ordering, to offset labor costs. In contrast, McDonald's locations outside California are extending hours and increasing staffing to cater to the summer rush.
