Increase in Freight Traffic Across the China-Primorye Border by 36 Percent
The Primorye region in Russia is set to witness significant developments in its transport and border infrastructure by the end of 2025. These updates, totalling over 8 billion rubles in investment from regional and federal budgets, aim to address the rapid increase in transportation volumes and foster economic growth.
Andrey Blokhin, the Minister of Economic Development of the region, has emphasised the importance of these infrastructure improvements. He believes that the modernization of existing checkpoints and the construction of new ones are crucial to meet the growing demands of trade and tourism.
One of the key projects is the significantly updated Pogranichny complex, capable of handling up to 500 vehicles per day. This complex, along with the Markov and Kraschino checkpoints, each designed for 130 and 650 trucks per day respectively, will be either opened or modernized by the end of 2025.
These updates are expected to increase the total throughput capacity in Primorye fivefold, reducing border congestion and ensuring faster delivery of goods. This faster delivery will have a positive impact on both business and the investment attractiveness of the region.
The Minister also highlighted the ongoing joint projects with China, with the latter currently ranking first in the volume of foreign investment in the Primorye Territory. In 2025, more than 40 joint projects have been initiated by companies such as Russian Railways and Far Eastern Shipping Company.
The increased capacity is not just beneficial for trade. Cargo turnover between Primorye and China has already seen a 36% increase in the first months of 2025 compared to the same period last year. With around 800 trucks crossing the border with China daily, which is 68% more than in the pre-pandemic period, these updates are timely and necessary.
These infrastructure upgrades are not just about numbers. They are about creating conditions for increasing tourist flow and further developing international cooperation. As the Minister puts it, "The faster delivery of goods will have a positive impact on both business and the investment attractiveness of the region."
