Imperial Brands to Close or Sell Langenhagen Plant, 640 Jobs at Risk
Imperial Brands is set to divest from its Reemtsma plant in Langenhagen, near Hannover. The company plans to cease production at the site, with options to sell or close it. Around 640 employees are affected by the decision.
The Langenhagen plant, opened in 1971, produces classic cigarettes, fine-cut tobacco, and tobacco sticks for heat-not-burn devices. However, high production costs and insufficient capacity utilization have led to the decision to relocate production abroad. Reemtsma board member Rémi Guillon attributed this to declining volumes and challenging regulatory hurdles.
The decision follows a review of Imperial Brands' global manufacturing network in light of its renewed strategy by 2030. Reemtsma considers relocating production potentially to other unspecified sites within its global manufacturing network. The NGG union has announced resistance to the plans and demands a future perspective for the employees. The company aims to conclude consultations with the works council within the coming months.
