But for those on an ICE train travelling from Munich to Hamburg, the frustration could've been avoided. The train was unceremoniously halted just one stop short of its destination. Initial reactions from passengers suggested it was all a prank, akin to a staged production like Candid Camera.

In reality, the staff had a bone to pick, or should we say a train to clean. As reported by the Hamburger Abendblatt, the ICE train was cast off in Nuremberg, leaving passengers high and dry for an hour before they could catch a crowded replacement. The staff announced over the loudspeaker that they were making a statement, claiming the train was too filthy for their standards.

One passenger who witnessed the scene told the paper that many initially thought the announcement was a joke. However, he confirmed that the ICE wasn't particularly dirty. "It could've used a quick vacuuming." He also shared that the subsequent train was a sardine can, with passengers "stacked like sardines" in the aisles. Reservations were tossed out the window.

The railway company apologized for the inconvenience, acknowledging that their goal is to maintain high-quality standards on long-distance trains. Regrettably, they deemed the condition of this train unfit for continuation. It was an isolated incident.

Under DB's compensation policy, passengers are entitled to a refund of 25% of their ticket price if there's a delay of at least 60 minutes at the destination station. This rises to 50% for delays lasting 120 minutes. Applications can be made via the DB Navigator app, with most refunds being processed within a few days. Last year, the German railway shelled out almost 200 million euros in compensation for delays.
