Hyundai will commence production of the Ioniq 3 electric vehicle in Turkey from 2026 onwards.
Hyundai Motor Company has announced plans to produce the Ioniq 3, its first electric vehicle (EV) in Europe, in Turkey starting next year. The news marks a significant milestone for Hyundai as it becomes the first foreign manufacturer to bring Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) technology to Turkey.
The Ioniq 3 was previewed at the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich, with production expected to commence in 2027. The sporty compact model, measuring 4.29 meters in length, 1.94 meters in width, and 1.43 meters in height, showcases typical features of the Ioniq electric car family such as the pixel headlights.
The Ioniq 3 will be developed on the E-GMP, a versatile platform that allows for various battery pack sizes and configurations. It is likely to use the 400-volt version of the E-GMP platform, with battery packs of 60.3 or 81.4 kWh. However, no information was provided about whether the 800-volt variant of the E-GMP platform will be used for the Ioniq 3.
The production of the Ioniq 3 will take place at the plant in Turkish Izmit, a facility that currently mainly produces internal combustion engine small cars like the i10, i20, and Bayon. This move towards electric vehicle production is part of Hyundai's strategy to reduce the production capacity of the factory from 245,000 to 190,000 vehicles per year as it converts for electric cars. However, no specific confirmation was given about the temporary reduction in production capacity.
The Ioniq 3 will be the first electric vehicle produced by Hyundai in Europe in Turkey and the first electric vehicle exported to Europe from Turkey after Togg, a new Turkish electric car brand pushed by the state, targeting Germany after launching in its home market. The main markets for the Ioniq 3 are expected to be Britain, Germany, and France.
The Ioniq 3 design study, named Concept Three, was also unveiled at the IAA. Technical details about the Ioniq 3 were not given at the show, with the focus being on the design. The Ioniq 3's design showcases a futuristic and aerodynamic look, embodying Hyundai's commitment to sustainable mobility.
In conclusion, Hyundai's decision to produce the Ioniq 3 in Turkey marks a significant step in the company's electric vehicle strategy. The Ioniq 3, with its sleek design and advanced technology, is expected to make a strong impact in the European market, particularly in Britain, Germany, and France.
