Hydrogen Strategy Unveiled by Saarland for the Period 2025 to 2032
Minister of Economy Jürgen Barke presented the hydrogen strategy for the Saarland on April 7, 2022, in Saarbrücken. The strategy aims to make the region a leading player in the hydrogen economy by 2032.
The strategy is centred around four main areas of action: hydrogen supply, infrastructure, usage, and suppliers and service providers.
In the hydrogen supply area, the focus is on building and promoting generation and procurement structures. The infrastructure area aims to expand transport networks, distribution structures, and logistics and refueling systems. The usage area targets using hydrogen in industry, energy generation, and mobility to reduce CO2 emissions. The suppliers and service providers area aims to strengthen the regional industry that provides components, plants, and services for hydrogen technology.
Social acceptance and interregional networking are considered important aspects of the strategy's implementation. Securing a sufficient workforce skilled in hydrogen technology is another key focus. The strategy also includes the promotion of research and education in the field of hydrogen technology.
The state government sees close cooperation between politics, business, and science as a crucial prerequisite for the successful implementation of the projects. The project developed by the Saarland state government for the implementation of the hydrogen strategy 2025-2032 is called "H2 Saarland."
The strategy serves as a guideline for the coming years, aiming to systematically promote the entire value chain, from generation to transport to usage and technology manufacturing. It also addresses cross-sectional issues such as research, education, securing skilled workers, social acceptance, and interregional networking.

Hydrogen is seen as a key technology for climate protection and a significant economic factor, according to Minister Barke. Around 120 actors from municipalities, business, and research attended the event, demonstrating a strong commitment to the hydrogen economy in the Saarland. The strategy does not mention any new participants or actors beyond these 120 actors. The strategy does not provide new details on the timeline beyond the previously mentioned goal of becoming a leading region in the hydrogen economy by 2032.
