High Speed Rail Australia (HSRA) has revealed plans for a high-speed rail link between Sydney and Newcastle at an industry briefing in Newcastle, late August 2023. The organization, led by new CEO Tim Parker since early 2023, aims to connect major cities along Australia's east coast with a high-speed rail network.

HSRA, an independent, non-governmental organization, envisions a network similar to Japan's Shinkansen or France's TGV, connecting cities like Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne, and Brisbane. In 2023, HSRA presented plans for the first section of an east coast high-speed rail connection, between Sydney and Newcastle. This project, if realized, could significantly reduce transport emissions by replacing air travel on these routes.

The authority has commissioned eight studies, including a business case for the Sydney-Newcastle line, due by the end of 2023. If all goes well, work on this line could start in 2027 and be completed by 2037. However, bipartisan support is needed, and the federal opposition has yet to make a clear commitment. A geotechnical study is currently underway, including drilling 27 boreholes, to determine the depths of two long rail tunnels. The High Speed Rail Authority has begun work on a project that could deliver high-speed rail in the 2030s.

High Speed Rail Australia's plans for a Sydney-Newcastle high-speed rail link, if realized, could greatly reduce transport emissions and improve connectivity. The project's success depends on further political support and the completion of ongoing studies. The ultimate goal is a comprehensive high-speed rail network connecting major cities and regional communities along Australia's east coast.
