High-Performance Corvette ZR1X Sets Milestone at Nurburgring with 1,250 Horsepower
The latest Chevrolet Corvette has made history on the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit, with the mid-engined ZR1X model setting a blistering lap time of 6 minutes 49.275 seconds. This time, set during testing in 2026, makes the ZR1X the fastest American production car around the legendary German track, surpassing previous records such as the Ford Mustang GTD and the Corvette ZR1 itself.
Three examples of the ZR1X, along with a Z06 and a standard ZR1, were taken to Germany for the record-breaking attempt. The drivers, all Chevrolet engineers responsible for developing the sports car, were highly skilled but not professional racecar drivers.
The ZR1X is a hybrid vehicle, featuring a turbocharged V8 engine and an electric motor at the front axle, producing approximately 1,250 horsepower. This powerful combination propelled the ZR1X to the top of the leaderboard, outperforming its American rival, the Ford Mustang GTD, and even beating the Corvette ZR1's own lap time.
The ZR1X's impressive performance places it in the top 10 fastest production cars around the Nurburgring. However, it still needs to beat the outright Nurburgring lap record, currently held by the Mercedes-AMG One with a time of 6 minutes 29.09 seconds.
GM president Mark Reuss stated that no auto manufacturer has attempted a Nurburgring lap attempt like this before, and he claimed that the Corvettes used in the lap attempt are the best in the Corvette's history. Chevrolet vehicle dynamics engineer Drew Cattell now holds the record for the fastest lap time by any non-professional racing driver at the Nurburgring.
The Corvette models used in the Nurburgring lap attempt were US-specification production models, modified for improved safety, including the addition of a roll cage, full containment race seat, six-point safety harness, and fire extinguisher.
