Heating system in Pulheim, FW, resulting in gas emissions
Gas Leak in Pulheim: A Close Call
A nail-biting situation unfolded in the heart of Pulheim, Germany, on Monday afternoon, November 25th. During routine maintenance on a building's heating system, a gas leak was discovered, sending ripples of concern through the community.
The volunteer fire departments of Pulheim, Geyen, and Brauweiler were already battling a reported fire in Pulheim-Brauweiler with full-time forces called in at 1:20 PM, when they received a new alert. Gas was leaking from a residential and commercial building on Venloer Straße, right in the center of Pulheim. Luckily, due to the ongoing incident in Brauweiler, fire engines from Geyen and Pulheim, along with an alerted fire engine from Stommeln, were able to respond swiftly, while local forces and full-time crews remained on the Brauweiler scene. Medical support from Frechen was also called in.
Upon arrival, the technician found that gas was escaping uncontrollably from the system. He promptly shut off the main gas supply and rendered the system inoperable. He then alerted the fire department, who quickly evacuated the building, which housed a business, doctor's practices, and apartments, and closed off Venloer Straße in the affected area.
Despite initial measurements showing no dangerous gas concentrations, the energy supplier later confirmed the escape of gas during a step-by-step restart of the system. Fortunately, this didn't pose any further danger to residents. After handing over the system to the owners and the energy supplier, the 20 forces on site, consisting of five fire engines, were able to lift the closure and evacuation order about an hour and a quarter later, and return to their stations.
