Health and Vitality of French Cinema at Cannes 2025

The 78th Cannes Film Festival is underway, but the blooming figures for French film production in 2025 aren't all sunshine and roses. A storm's brewing over the industry, with attendance at theaters since January being dreadfully low, a massive crisis looming in the animation sector, continued weaknesses among independent distributors, and cinemas struggling to fork over the dough for eco-friendly transitions.

In their annual observatory report for 2025, the Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée (CNC) takes a positive stance, saying that 309 films, including 231 with French initiative, have received their nod of approval. The funding for these films has increased by 7.5% to €1.4 billion and boast an average budget of €5 million, the highest in a decade. However, the general director of Natixis Coficiné, Isabelle Terrel, warns that funding for next year might be a real pain in the ass. There's a good chance that not much bread will be left by year's end, leaving mid-budget films high and dry in their quest for financial support.

The sluggish theater attendance and the deep crisis in animation, weaknesses in independent distribution channels, and funding struggles for mid-size films aren't just a couple of speed bumps on the road to success. They're a full-blown apocalypse for the industry, threatening its diversity, financial health, and ecological responsibility.

Now, where's the popcorn? We're gonna need it to get through this mess!
