Hamburg Set to Become Global Green Hydrogen Hub

Hamburg is set to become a global hub for green hydrogen innovation, with two major events on the horizon. The H2 Expo and Conference, focusing on 'green hydrogen' and the hydrogen economy, will take place parallel to the World's Leading Trade Fair Wind Energy Hamburg from September 27 to 30, 2022. Then, from October 21–23, 2025, the Hydrogen Technology Conference & Expo Europe (H2 Expo) will return to Hamburg, coinciding with Wind Energy Hamburg.

Aurubis, a leading copper producer, has kicked off a test series in Hamburg for the industrial-scale use of hydrogen in copper anode production. This marks a significant step towards decarbonizing the industry.

Hamburg Aviation has ambitious plans to build a production plant for green kerosene, aiming to provide up to 20% of the federal government's blending quota starting in 2026. This project, along with others like HH-WIN and emission-free ships on the Alster by 2025, underscores Hamburg's commitment to renewable energies and sustainability.

The transport sector, responsible for a substantial 28.5% of Europe's greenhouse gas emissions, is a key target for decarbonization solutions. Hamburg, with its six existing hydrogen refueling stations, is well-positioned to lead this transition.

The upcoming H2 Expo and Conference, along with Hamburg's ongoing projects and commitments, solidify the city's status as a leading economic location for technology innovation in renewable and green hydrogen. These initiatives not only contribute to Hamburg's sustainability goals but also position the city as a global hub for cross-industry exchange and collaboration in hydrogen technologies.
