H&M unveils a collection inspired by past designer partnerships

In a move to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its guest designer programme, H&M is re-releasing pieces from some of its most successful designer collaborations. These collaborations, spanning a variety of brands, will be available in a series of global drops starting from Oct. 24 in Paris.

Kicking off the series is a collection from H&M's partnership with Viktor & Rolf, Versace, Moschino, Mugler, and others. This initiative is part of H&M's larger circular fashion initiative, which aims to promote sustainability in the fashion industry.

The items for the drops will be sourced via H&M's pre-owned initiative, partnerships with Sellpy and international vintage retailers. This approach not only reduces waste but also adds a touch of nostalgia to the collection.

H&M's foray into designer collaborations began in 2004 with a collection designed by Karl Lagerfeld. Since then, many of these collaborations have sold out as soon as they launched, with some pieces garnering premium prices at resale.

The relaunch was curated by stylist Kate Phelan, a British fashion stylist and journalist who has worked for British Vogue and is known for curating designer collections for H&M.

Remember when Isaac Mizrahi was the first major fashion designer to launch an accessible fashion capsule with Target in 2003? Target's "Design for All" initiative began in 1999 with a Michael Graves housewares line. Fast forward to 2021, and Uniqlo has recently hired Clare Waight Keller as its new creative director, following her successful collaboration with the brand last year. Clare's appointment may signal that the line between luxury and fast fashion is becoming increasingly blurred.

Target also celebrated its own 20th anniversary in 2019 by relaunching some of its most successful designer collaborations, including those with Annu Sui, Proenza Schouler, and Zac Posen, who is currently the creative director at Gap Inc.

As the fashion industry continues to evolve, it's exciting to see brands like H&M and Target embracing sustainability while still offering fashion-forward designs. Stay tuned for more drops in the coming weeks! The online drop is scheduled for Oct. 31.
