Commencement of construction for the new S-Bahn rail line officially underway - Groundbreaking ceremony for new metro line commences officially

Get ready for a major upgrade in public transportation! A significant expansion of the S-Bahn network is underway, connecting Hanau to Frankfurt via Maintal, north of the Main River. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Nordmainische S-Bahn project takes place on Monday. This exciting development involves constructing two new tracks along the existing railway, along with two new stations and a tunnel section.

According to Deutsche Bahn, the Nordmainische S-Bahn project is one of the most important rail expansion and capacity projects in Hesse, significantly enhancing the performance and attractiveness of public passenger transport. Once completed, the new line will operate every 15 minutes during peak hours.

Two new stations are being planned

The 20 kilometers of new tracks will connect to the Frankfurt S-Bahn tunnel. The project includes constructing a new tunnel spanning approximately 1.4 kilometers, with two single-track tubes, between the Konstablerwache station and Frankfurt (Main) Ost. The two new stations will be called Frankfurt-Ost (deep) and Frankfurt-Fechenheim.

The estimated costs for this project are expected to exceed two billion euros, with completion scheduled for early 2030s according to current information. Preliminary construction work, including demolishing and replacing a bridge in Hanau and putting a new railway crossing into operation in May 2023, has already begun.
