Governing Transport Agency Grants $786 Million Agreement for Construction of Bridge Connecting Bur Dubai to Dubai Islands

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has announced the completion of the Al Shindagha Corridor Project, a significant development that aims to upgrade 15 intersections over 13 km. This milestone marks a dramatic improvement in traffic flow and connectivity, reducing travel times by approximately 85%.

The project, part of Dubai’s strategic plan to enhance traffic flow and connectivity, benefits over one million residents. Key components of the project include a 1,425-metre-long bridge with four lanes in each direction, accommodating up to 16,000 vehicles per hour, and 2,000 metres of connecting roads on both the Dubai Islands and Bur Dubai sides.

The first phase of the initiative, completed in 2020, delivered three bridges totaling 1.6 km, enhancing traffic flow between Dubai Islands and Al Khaleej Street. The latest development, the completion of the final bridge, reduces travel time from roughly 80 minutes down to 12 minutes across the corridor. The seamless connectivity between Jumeirah Street and Infinity Bridge is now just 5 minutes.

The Al Shindagha Corridor Project supports a dramatic improvement in traffic efficiency and travel times, leveraging smart technologies like AI-enabled drones for better construction management and boosting operational efficiency by 40%. This initiative underscores Dubai's continued investment in smart, future-ready transport solutions.

The bridge stands 18.5 metres above water, with a 75-metre-wide navigational channel to facilitate marine traffic. It spans over Dubai Creek between Infinity Bridge and Port Rashid Development. The project is in line with directives from Dubai's leadership and falls under the traffic solutions agreement between RTA and Dubai Holding.

In addition to vehicular improvements, the Al Shindagha Corridor Project also includes a dedicated pedestrian and cycling path with elevators, as highlighted by Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA. This initiative is a significant step towards meeting the demands of rapid urban growth in Dubai.

The completion of the Al Shindagha Corridor Project is expected to deliver AED45 billion in economic savings over two decades. This significant development forms part of RTA's flagship undertakings and is the second contract under the Dubai Islands access initiative. The project underscores Dubai's commitment to delivering smart, efficient, and future-ready transport solutions for its growing population.
