Germany's Minimum Wage Rises, Joint Inspection Ensures Compliance

Germany's minimum wage has seen an increase, with special branch minimum wages also applying in various industries. A joint inspection last week in Brandenburg focused on ensuring compliance with these wage standards and other labor laws.

As of January 1, 2024, Germany's general statutory minimum wage stands at €12.41 gross per hour. It is set to rise to €12.82 from January 1, 2025. This increase aims to improve workers' earnings and living standards.

Last Thursday, officials from the Customs Office Potsdam and the Brandenburg Ministry of Economy, Labor and Energy conducted a joint inspection. They targeted minimum wage violations, tax evasion, social insurance fraud, and illegal foreign employment. The Main Customs Office Potsdam led this nationwide focus inspection and a minimum wage special inspection in Brandenburg.

The inspection covered a wide range of sectors, including barbershops, gastronomy, accommodation, retail, agriculture, laundries, and cleaning companies. A total of 115 people were inspected, and two business record checks were conducted. The team comprised 56 employees from Financial Control Schwarzarbeit and 12 from cooperation authorities.

Out of the 34 cases that required further action, several involved non-payment of minimum wage, suspected contribution evasion, benefit fraud, and illegal foreign employment. These findings highlight the importance of regular inspections to uphold labor laws and protect workers' rights.

The recent inspection in Brandenburg serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to Germany's minimum wage standards and other labor laws. The increase in the general minimum wage and the application of special branch minimum wages aim to ensure fair compensation for workers. Regular inspections help maintain a level playing field for businesses and protect workers' rights.
