Germany, Czech Republic Join Forces to Combat Cross-Border Smuggling
Customs officers from Germany and the Czech Republic recently collaborated in a joint inspection near Karlovy Vary. The operation, led by the Regensburg Customs Office, aimed to combat cross-border smuggling and ensure EU security.
The inspection, which took place in early July, involved nine German and seven Czech customs officers. They utilised a mobile X-ray vehicle and drug detection dogs from both countries to scrutinise passengers and their luggage, with a particular focus on narcotics.
Previous inspections of this nature have led to the seizure of prohibited goods such as drugs, weapons, or counterfeit items. In a similar operation, a German drug detection dog previously discovered approximately 60 grams of marijuana. In the Czech Republic, possession of more than 10 grams of marijuana is a criminal offense, carrying a potential prison sentence of up to five years.
These joint inspections, conducted several times a year on both sides of the border, play a crucial role in curbing cross-border smuggling and maintaining EU security. The recent operation in Karlovy Vary is a testament to the collaborative efforts of German and Czech customs officers in upholding these goals.
