Germany Clarifies Taxi Rules for Guide and Assistance Dogs

Taxi regulations in Germany have been clarified regarding the transport of guide and assistance dogs. Passengers must now declare their furry companions during bookings, and drivers must comply with new guidelines set by the ADAC.

Under the new rules, taxi drivers are obligated to transport guide and assistance dogs, regardless of their personal preferences or allergy concerns. This is to prevent discrimination against visually impaired or disabled passengers. However, under normal circumstances, passengers are not required to bring their dogs along. In case of an accident, both the dog owner and the driver may be held responsible.

Dogs in taxis are legally considered cargo and must be secured safely to prevent endangerment to both the animal and the passenger. Some taxi companies may charge extra for cleaning due to soiling from animals. Unexpected or aggressive behavior from passengers or animals can make trips challenging for drivers, and not every taxi vehicle or driver may be comfortable with large dogs or certain breeds.

The ADAC's recommendations aim to ensure the safety and comfort of both passengers and their assistance dogs during taxi rides. Passengers are advised to declare their dogs during bookings to avoid any misunderstandings or inconveniences.
