Garden Show 2027: Cycling Routes Closed in and Near Nordstern Park

In the city of Gelsenkirchen, cyclists will face changes in their usual routes as the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) Ruhr 2027 construction begins. The city has announced closures and detours for several bike paths, including those north of the Emscher and south of the Rhein-Herne Canal.

The IGA construction has caused the closure of the canal bridge and the popular north-south connection on Emscher Island, which is currently off-limits to visitors for safety reasons. This closure, along with the closure of several bike paths around the Nordsternpark, will remain in effect until the completion of the IGA in 2028.

For cyclists seeking alternative routes, it's recommended to check official municipality or event websites closer to the event date. Local cycling networks and apps like Komoot or Google Maps, which often update cycling path statuses and provide alternative routes, can also be consulted. Alternatively, Ruhr Tourismus GmbH or local tourist information centres in the Ruhr area can provide official detour plans and cycling recommendations.

The eastern detour for the closed bike paths leads over the bike path south of the Rhein-Herne Canal, over the Doppelbogen Bridge, past the coal mixing plant and the Emscher Pump Station over the Straße Am Bugapark. The western detour for the closed bike paths leads on the Essen city area north of the Schurenbachhalde over the Zweigert Bridge and north of the Emscher in an easterly direction.

Christoph Prinz, head of the IGA task force of the city of Gelsenkirchen, acknowledges the inconvenience caused by the closures. He assures that new cycle and pedestrian paths will be built through the park after the construction work is completed.

The temporary exhibition content will be dismantled until early 2028, and the detours for the closed bike paths must be used until the end of the garden exhibition in October 2027. It's worth noting that the closure of the canal bridge at the city border between Essen and Gelsenkirchen also affects junction 61 of the NRW cycle network. An alternative for crossing the canal is available at the Doppelbogen Bridge.

The IGA Ruhr 2027 is scheduled to run from April 2027 to October 2027. For the most accurate and updated information on alternative bike routes in Gelsenkirchen during the IGA Ruhr 2027, it's best to stay informed and plan accordingly.

  1. Due to the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) Ruhr 2027 construction, the finance sector might experience fluctuations in tourism revenue from Gelsenkirchen, as the closures and detours for several bike paths could impact travel plans for some visitors.
  2. The closure of the canal bridge and popular north-south connection on Emscher Island, as part of the IGA Ruhr 2027 construction, is likely to have a significant impact on the transportation industry, particularly the cycling routes, as these changes force cyclists to seek alternative routes.
