Freiburg's 'Twins' Wind Turbines Rise for Climate Neutrality

The construction of two new citizen wind energy installations, dubbed the 'twins', on the Roßkopf near Freiburg is well underway. The project, led by the local company regiowind Freiburg, aims to contribute significantly to the city's climate change goals.

The assembly process is progressing swiftly, with heavy transports, including tower segments and rotor blades, already delivered to the mountain. A 190-meter-high crane is now being employed to install these components on the wind turbines. Once assembled, the installations will undergo maintenance, certification, and grid connection procedures.

The managing directors of regiowind, Thomas Schuwald and Michael Klein, have expressed their enthusiasm about this significant step towards Freiburg's climate change neutrality. They envision the installations generating around 18 to 20 million kilowatt hours of green electricity annually from spring 2026, enough to power approximately 6,000 households in the area.

The expected completion date for the assembly of the installations is early November. Until then, hikers and cyclists are advised to avoid construction areas and follow signposted detours for safety reasons. Upon completion, these installations will not only contribute to Freiburg's renewable energy goals but also serve as a testament to the city's commitment to sustainable energy.
