Kansas City Redesign Moves Forward with Urban Development Funding

The redesign of Kansas City, a significant public space in the district of VI Zollverein, is set to begin following the approval of urban development funding. The funding will cover 80% of the costs for the redesign, amounting to approximately 280,000 EUR.

The total costs for the redesign of Kansas City are expected to be around 6.2 million euros. This extensive project will be carried out in multiple performance phases, with the first commissioning stage being for planning services.

The Committee for Traffic and Mobility has approved planning services worth 350,000 euros for the redesign of Kansas City in Stoppenberg. The engineering firm that received the planning contract for this project is the Bureau for City and Traffic Planning Urbanista.

The municipal share for the redesign of Kansas City is 70,000 euros. The remaining 20% of the planning costs will be contributed by the city portal.

The redesign of Kansas City is a central component of the integrated development concept for the district of VI Zollverein, which was approved by the city council in 2020. The project was launched in a realization competition on the city portal in 2024, and the winning design will be commissioned for performance phases 2, 3, 5, and 6 of the redesign.

Further details about the redesign of Kansas City can be found in Attachment 0058/2025/6. The final construction costs for the redesign will be decided at a later date with a separate construction resolution.

The redesign of Kansas City is part of a multi-stage process, with the first commissioning stage being for planning services. Planning services for performance phases 2 (preliminary design) and 3 (design planning) of the redesign will be awarded to the winning engineering firm.

The redesign of Kansas City is an exciting development for the district of VI Zollverein, and it is expected to significantly enhance the area's appeal and functionality. Stay tuned for more updates on this project.
