Financial Year Budget Draft Discussed with the Commission
In the picturesque city of Koblenz, efforts are underway to address the challenges posed by climate change and improve mobility for its residents.
The city has been experiencing the increasing consequences of global warming, with heat days and heavy rain becoming more common. To combat these issues, a climate adaptation concept for all districts will be presented by fall. This concept includes measures such as shading elements, rainwater storage, expansion of the drinking water infrastructure, and cooling of heat hotspots. An immediate heat action plan will follow, detailing measures to be taken after heat warnings.
In an effort to improve mobility, several projects are planned. These include strengthening public transport, building a new train stop in the Rauental, renovating the B9, implementing speed-reducing measures in residential areas, investing in cycling, and constructing a cable car for a new residential area in Niederberg. The bus network and cycling network in Koblenz have already been expanded, but many drivers still experience traffic jams daily. Traffic jams in the city are often caused by construction sites or accidents, and potential heavily loaded nodes or bridges are being monitored for improvements.
The city is also addressing the issue of local overheating, particularly in the Rauental. A redesign of the area is underway, which could serve as a model for the rest of the city. Meanwhile, the city's criminal preventive committee has been working on improving security for several years. Measures include improved lighting of underpasses, above-ground crossing options, elimination of fear spaces, active day and night public order office checks in areas with anomalies, double patrols of the police and public order office, and constant monitoring of the city's security situation with the police.
While video surveillance is an option for improving security in the city, it will only be implemented if legal requirements are met. Elsewhere, David Langner, the mayor of Cologne, has plans to enhance mobility in his city by improving the bus network and expanding the bicycle path system.
As Koblenz continues to grow and evolve, these efforts demonstrate a commitment to creating a city that is not only beautiful but also sustainable and safe for its residents.
