A Potential Ferry Restoration for Guntersblum and Nature Reserve Kühkopf

A surprise find has allowed the cultural landscapes Altrhein and Kühkopf Island to secure a used ferry, potentially restoring the connection between the two!

"It was definitely shocking to find such an excellent offer so suddenly," explains Claudia Blaesis-Wirth, the chairman of the association.

Matching the Rhine's Requirements

The ferry must comply with the river's demands, requiring it to be both powerful and maneuverable enough to handle currents. Luckily, the used ferry offers these traits, making Blaesis-Wirth smile.

Cost

The pre-owned ferry, previously operational on the Ems, cost about 150,000 Euros net. The association managed to cover two-thirds of the purchase price, according to Blaesis-Wirth. The remaining portion was financed through a loan.

The Search for Sponsors Continues

Though part of the purchase price has been covered, other costs, such as permits and maintenance of NATO ramps in both Guntersblum and Kühkopf, remain. Therefore, the association continues to seek sponsors to help cover these expenses.

Additionally, captains are required to run the ferry during the summer months, and the association is searching for willing volunteers.

Passenger and Bike Capacity

The ferry can transport 12 passengers and 12 bicycles. Expect its arrival at the Oppenheimer Harbor in late July to early August.

However, an official start date is still uncertain. Blaesis-Wirth hopes the ferry can operate this year.

A Long-Awaited Solution

Originally, the association aimed to secure an electric ferry. Unfortunately, the price proved too high for the organization. Nonetheless, the procurement of the used ferry signifies a positive resolution since the last ferry connection between Guntersblum and Kühkopf ceased in 2012.
