Federal Reserve Meeting Date
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) will convene four more times this year, starting with the meeting scheduled for July 29-30, 2025. This meeting will take place over two days, concluding with the release of a policy statement at 2 pm Eastern time on July 30. The remaining FOMC meetings for 2025 are scheduled for September 16-17, October 28-29, and December 9-10.
The FOMC meets approximately every six weeks, a convention that dates back to the market stresses of 1981. However, the Committee is required to meet at least four times a year.
The current target range for the short-term federal funds rate stands at 4.25% to 4.50%. As of July 22, interest rate traders have assigned a 95% probability to the FOMC keeping the rate within this range.
The June Consumer Price Index (CPI) report showed that tariffs are beginning to have a marginal impact on inflation. Inflationary pressures could resurface as a result of President Donald Trump's tariff policies.
Steve Dean, chief investment officer at Compound Planning, suggests that businesses can respond to tariff increases by either raising prices or absorbing the added costs.
In September 2024, the Federal Reserve brought borrowing costs down from a 23-year high. The Fed cut the short-term federal funds rate by 25 basis points (bps) at each meeting in November and December. The worst bout of inflation in the U.S. economy in 40 years was nearly back down to the central bank's long-term target.
The FOMC meetings are significant events in the economic calendar. September remains the betting favorite for the next cut, with a 58% chance of a quarter-point cut expected. The next jobs report, the next CPI report, and the Fed's policy decision at these meetings will be closely watched.
