Exploring Collaborative Efforts: Burkina Faso's Ministry Ponders Alliance with Wave Money for Enhanced Digital Financial Access

In a significant move towards expanding digital and financial inclusion in Burkina Faso, the Ministry of Digital Transition, Postal and Electronic Communications recently held a meeting with the Wave Money Group. The purpose of the meeting, held on July 24, 2025, in Ouagadougou, was to explore a strategic partnership between the two entities.

The collaboration aims to leverage digital financial services to bring millions of previously unbanked individuals into formal financial systems. Wave Money Group, a mobile money provider, has expressed a keen interest in this partnership, with a desire to significantly bolster digital and financial inclusion across Burkina Faso.

The Wave Money Group delegation, led by Awa GUEYE BA, Regional Director of Public Policy, discussed avenues for the strategic partnership with the Ministry. The discussions were a follow-up to an initial meeting held several months prior.

The partnership seeks to deploy and scale Wave's mobile money platform, supported by a significant funding round of approximately EUR 117 million raised recently. This investment aims to accelerate the roll-out and adoption of digital financial products in several countries, including Burkina Faso.

The objectives of this collaboration include increasing accessibility of secure and affordable financial services, enhancing digital infrastructure, and curbing the high cost and friction traditionally associated with financial transactions in low-income and marginalized populations.

The impact of this partnership is expected to substantially increase the number of financially included people in Burkina Faso, drive economic participation of underserved communities, and support governmental goals of digital economy growth and inclusive financial ecosystems.

Wave Money Group currently operates in five regions of Burkina Faso, serving over one million users. To further educate the Burkinabe population on financial transactions and digital tools, the company plans to conduct awareness campaigns.

The proposals resulting from these exchanges will be presented to the Ministry's senior officials for evaluation. Technical Advisor Saidou YANOGO proposed engaging in joint discussions to outline the specifics of the prospective partnership. Awa GUEYE BA expressed a desire for a more structured partnership between Wave Money Group and the Ministry.

The Wave Money Group's services include money transfers, communication credit payments, and bill payments. As part of its continent-wide strategy, the company's expansion and investment plans in Burkina Faso are made in close collaboration with national authorities, reflecting a strategic partnership designed to foster digital transition and financial inclusion nationwide.
