Experience Shift: Kia EV9's Unease vs Rivian R1S's 450-Mile Rural Indiana Assurance, Boosting Confidence Previously Lacking with Kia

Experienced a shift from the challenging Kia EV9 to the Rivian R1S, finding the 450-mile range during rural Indiana travels instilled a confidence that earlier evaded me with Kia.

In the ever-evolving world of electric vehicles (EVs), the distinction between Eastern and Western approaches is becoming increasingly apparent. A recent switch from a high-spec Kia EV9 to an all-electric, all-purpose American SUV, the Rivian R1S, serves as a prime example of this contrast.

The Kia EV9, with its refined, intuitive, and feature-rich design, epitomises the Eastern approach to EVs. It's a "tech-lounge on wheels," designed to impress with its upscale appointments and intuitive interfaces. However, this focus on luxury and comfort sometimes comes at the cost of reliability and a sense of rugged certainty.

On the other hand, the Rivian R1S embodies the Western mindset of honesty, utility, capability, and ruggedness. This American startup's offering is a trustworthy vehicle, well-suited to challenging environments, reflecting values of confidence and straightforwardness over gadget-heavy luxury.

The Rivian R1S offers an unspoken contract of trust between driver and machine, built on reliability. Its range, for instance, is considered "insane" and more honest than Kia's. The vehicle's HVAC system works efficiently and subtly, and it lacks some creature comforts like a camera mirror and built-in massage therapist compared to the Kia EV9. Yet, it provides confidence to drive through challenging terrains without worry.

The Rivian R1S competes with the Tesla Model X, Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, Volvo EX90, and a later release Kia EV9/Genesis GV90. It is spacious, comfortable, and boasts a beautifully designed interior. The Rivian R2, set for global availability in 2026-2027, will have a stylistic mix of utility and modern design, with teaser images showing a lower roof but higher ground clearance than average compact SUVs.

The Rivian R2 is a new medium-sized BEV SUV, positioned below the R1 series with a projected 0-60 mph time between 3.7 and 4.3 seconds. It will use the latest-generation NMC lithium-ion cells and have fast-charging capability over 270 kW. The Rivian R2's range is targeted to be 300 miles with an optional 400-mile battery pack.

Rivian's approach to luxury is less decadent and more design-logic filtered through a Patagonia catalog, focusing on functionality and purpose. This approach is evident in the Rivian R1S's reliability, which sets it apart from the Kia EV9.

In essence, the Eastern approach (Kia EV9) prioritises luxury tech and comfort, sometimes at the expense of reliability, while the Western approach (Rivian R1S) prioritises robustness, utility, and honest performance to build consumer confidence in the vehicle’s capability and trustworthiness. This cultural and philosophical divide also influences how each vehicle reflects its maker’s national character: the Korean EV is sleek and hotel-like, the American EV is workmanlike and resilient.
