Evaluating the 2025 Volkswagen ID Buzz: Weighing Logic Against Emotional Appeal

Having spent a week behind the wheel of the 2025 VW ID Buzz, it remains ambiguous to me which consumers would opt for this vehicle. Yet, the reasons for wanting one of these electric vans are as crystal-clear as the daylight.

As an automotive journalist, vintage cars carrying a wave of nostalgia are a double-edged sword. It's a challenge not to let the irresistible charm of a Mazda Miata, Ford Bronco, or a Porsche 911 sway your opinion before climbing behind the wheel. But the (2025) Volkswagen ID Buzz presents an altogether new challenge: It's adorable, playful, and induces smiles, yet it ain't your memaw's minivan, or so they say. So let's break it down, shall we?

The Flip Side 🤐

Here's where we tackle the not-so-great stuff. Since good news is always best saved for last, let's start with the negatives.

First off, usability. Over the course of a week, I found it tough to grasp what a typical ID Buzz owner would use this van for on a daily basis. Are they driving it for commuting, hauling cargo, or just a Sunday getaway? Car and Driver's Andrew Collins recently put the ID Buzz to the test, hauling loads and furbabies. Although it offered ample cargo space, it wasn't exactly a breeze to adapt on the fly, unlike some minivans' easily removable seats or disappearing third row.

If you're planning on transporting kids, they'll need to be old enough to climb into the ID Buzz on their own, as it sits significantly higher than the average van (and perhaps even higher than the average SUV). Scaling the high cabin elevation feels more like hopping into a full-size pickup truck rather than a regular ride.

While the cabin ergonomics are serviceable, VW's abysmal window switches return, reminding us of the [ID.4] I previously drove. Once again, just like the ID.4, the ID Buzz features two switches for each set of windows – front and back. To choose the windows you want to operate, you first have to use a different switch, making it infuriating and boneheaded. Plus, the tiny sliding rear windows are frustratingly tiny, offering functionality resembling a vent more than a proper window. For a vehicle with ample sliding door space, it seems criminal that VW forgoes full-size windows.

Finally, chargers. The Buzz's range of (231) miles isn't terrible, but it's certainly not ideal for a $70,000 vehicle. During my test, the van's inability to connect to a fast charger became apparent, as it was restricted to charging only at home. This technical malfunction, apparently caused by a software issue, prevented my creamsicle-colored ID Buzz from receiving a charge from anything higher than a basic (120)-volt outlet.

Now, let's chat about the positives! 🌞

Despite its drawbacks, the ID Buzz is gifted in the design department. It's a striking, adorable, and downright fun vehicle – perfect for eliciting smiles. Whether you're cruising down the street or stationary at a Starbucks, the ID Buzz elicits attention and encourages others to smile, too.

Once behind the wheel, the driving experience is surprisingly refreshing. Despite its size, the "little" bus offers a peppy and responsive ride. It lets you carry speed through corners and even whirl around a roundabout at speed, a modest but appreciated touch for those seeking an engaging drive.

Comfort-wise, the ID Buzz doesn't disappoint. There isn't a lousy seat in the house, whether you're at the helm, shotgun, or sitting in any of the rear seats. The third row is so plush, it was recalled for being "too wide." Granted, range issues might prevent prolonged enjoyment, but at least the seats provide a comfortable throne while until the charge is complete.

Wrapping Up

The 2025 VW ID Buzz is a tricky nut to crack – it's an electric minivan that's both innovative and sprightly, yet it faces some practical usability challenges. It's expensive, limited in range, and lacks rugged utility aspects that some buyers spring for. However, it excels in areas such as design, comfort, and driving dynamics, bringing a breath of fresh air to EV minivans.

So, is it right for you? I wouldn't recommend buying one solely for practical reasons. Instead, consider it a unique and charming option for those seeking a lifestyle statement that fantastic driving dynamics, a comfortable cabin, and a smile-inducing design all embody.
