Enhancement of Kuwait's power and water resources by 7,000 megawatts through five significant undertakings
Kuwait is making significant strides in its energy and water sector, with several major projects underway or in the pipeline. These projects aim to add nearly 7,000 megawatts of power and 213 million gallons of water per day to the nation's capacity.
One of the notable projects is the Al-Khairan power and water plant, which is being tendered. Upon award, this project will be executed in two phases. The first phase will involve the installation of power generation turbines and water distilleries, while the second phase will complete the combined cycle phase, using steam to produce additional electricity. The Al-Khairan project, once awarded, is expected to generate 1,800 megawatts of electricity and produce 33 million imperial gallons of water per day.
The Public-Private Partnership Authority has announced the results of the prequalification process for companies and consortiums bidding on the Al-Khairan project, paving the way for its implementation. Interestingly, the consortium of Siemens Energy and Metito qualified for the construction of the Al-Khairan power and water plant.
Another significant project is the Al-Subiya power and water project (Phase 4), which is in the tender opening stage. With a capacity of generating 900 megawatts of electricity, this project is poised to make a substantial contribution to Kuwait's energy needs.
The Al-Khairan project will play a vital role in supporting production capacity due to increasing demand from urban expansion and new housing cities. Meanwhile, the Doha water project is in the tendering stage, with a capacity of producing 60 million gallons of water per day.
Not all projects are in the tendering stage, however. The North Al-Zour power and water project (Phases 2 and 3) has already been signed, boasting a capacity of generating 2,700 megawatts of electricity and producing 120 million gallons of water per day.
Multiple major energy and water projects are in progress in Kuwait, including the Al-Khairan, Al-Subiya, Al-Shagaya, and Doha projects, as well as the North Al-Zour (Phases 2 and 3). Some of these projects have already been signed, while others are in the tendering stage.
The Al-Shagaya power and water project (Phase 3) has been tendered, with a capacity of generating 1,600 megawatts of electricity. The Al-Khairan power and water plant (Phase 1) is expected to be tendered soon, with an anticipated capacity of generating 1,800 megawatts of electricity and producing 33 million gallons of water per day.
