EWE unveils blueprint for climate neutrality in energy sector - Energy provider EWE proposes a strategy for achieving carbon neutrality
EWE, a leading energy supplier based in Oldenburg, Germany, has announced an ambitious plan to become climate-neutral by 2035. This plan, rooted in renewable energy expansion, energy efficiency, and innovation, aims to combat climate change and align with Germany's broader goals for energy transition and climate protection.
The company's approach is multifaceted:
- Renewable Energy Expansion: EWE is investing in wind power, both offshore and onshore, as well as solar energy projects. The goal is to replace fossil fuel-based electricity generation with clean, renewable sources.
- Green Gas and Hydrogen: EWE is developing green gas solutions, such as biogas and green hydrogen, to decarbonize heating and industrial processes. This includes building infrastructure for sustainable gas supply and storage.
- Energy Efficiency and Digital Solutions: Improving energy efficiency is key to EWE's strategy. Smart grids, digital energy management systems, and energy-efficient technologies are being promoted to reduce overall consumption.
- Electrification and Sector Coupling: EWE supports electrification in transport and heating sectors to further reduce carbon emissions. By linking electricity, heating, and mobility sectors, EWE aims to maximize the use of renewables.
- Carbon Offsetting and Innovation: Where direct emissions cannot be eliminated, EWE plans to invest in carbon offset projects and innovative technologies such as carbon capture and storage.
EWE's direct emissions have already decreased by approximately 64% since 2018, with the company's exit from coal playing a significant role in this reduction. However, the greatest challenge lies in emissions from purchased goods and services, as well as from sold products and services. EWE aims to reduce these emissions by 65% compared to 2018.
To address this challenge, EWE plans to have 50% of its purchasing volume for the procurement of goods and services be climate-neutral by 2035. The company has already achieved a reduction of 3.9% in emissions from purchased goods and services since 2018.
In addition, future invoices from EWE will show CO2 emissions, allowing customers to make informed decisions about their energy consumption. The company's plan will be reviewed and adjusted annually if necessary.
EWE's commitment to climate neutrality extends to avoiding indirect emissions from 2035 onwards. The company aims to set its own emissions to zero by this date, demonstrating a strong commitment to a sustainable future.
- EWE's community policy includes a commitment to adhere to environmental-science principles, particularly in relation to climate-change, as seen in their goal to become climate-neutral by 2035.
- To achieve their climate-neutral target, EWE has announced an employment policy focused on renewable-energy expansion, investing in clean sources such as wind power and solar energy projects.
- Financing is crucial in EWE's strategy, with investments planned in green gas solutions and carbon offset projects, as well as in the development of digital solutions for energy efficiency.
- As part of their Environmental-Science approach, EWE includes in their employment policy a focus on the electrification and sector coupling of transport and heating sectors, aiming to maxmize the use of renewable energy.
