Electric Trucks Take Latin America by Storm
Electric trucks are making waves in Latin America, with several countries embracing the technology. Mercedes-Benz has introduced its electric trucks in Chile, while Volvo has launched its electric heavy truck line in the same country. Meanwhile, other manufacturers like BYD, Foton, and Zhongtong are also investing heavily in the region.
Chile is at the forefront of this shift, with multiple companies introducing electric trucks. Randon, a Brazilian manufacturer, and SQM, a national mining company, have collaborated to introduce fully electric semi-trailers and trucks for cargo transportation. In Colombia, Navitrans has begun trials with a 36-ton electric mixer truck from Foton, with plans to purchase more units. BYD has also announced three new electric cargo trucks for Colombia, with two models already on sale and one in a pilot project with Argos.
This trend is not limited to Chile and Colombia. Electric cargo transportation projects are gaining traction in several other Latin American countries. While the name of the company that introduced electric trucks for commercial use in Panama in 2023 is not known, it's clear that the region is moving towards greener transportation. Daimler Truck will commercialize the first fully electric Freightliner unit with Transportes Esteban in Mexico. Quantron AG plans to launch a 4.2-ton hydrogen truck in Brazil in May and a 44-ton truck in September, with expansion plans for other countries in the region. Mobility in Uruguay has also announced the launch of Landking electric trucks, projecting at least 100 sales for 2023.
The adoption of electric trucks in Latin America is accelerating, with multiple countries and companies embracing the technology. This shift is expected to reduce emissions and improve air quality in the region.
