Electric car project shelved by Pagani due to minimal customer demand.

Pagani, the high-performance sports car manufacturer known for its iconic V12 engines, has announced the abandonment of its electric vehicle project for the Utopia model. The decision was primarily driven by a lack of customer demand and technological limitations, rather than market conditions.

According to Sebastian Berridi, Pagani's spokesperson, the project was halted due to a lack of interest from customers and dealers. The V12 engine, symbolizing pure mechanical engineering, aligns with Pagani's ethos and is what customers expect from the brand.

The electric version of the Utopia was under development since 2026 in collaboration with Mercedes-AMG. However, simulations show that an electric Pagani would be about 600 to 700 kilograms heavier, contrary to Pagani’s focus on lightness, liveliness, and emotional driving experience.

Given the typically low annual mileage of Pagani cars, the overall ecological benefit of an electric powertrain is questionable. Additionally, Pagani rejected hybrid solutions as they were deemed too cumbersome and complex.

This situation reflects a broader pattern where other super-exclusive hypercar makers like Koenigsegg, Rimac, and Maserati have similarly canceled or postponed their electric projects due to a lack of enthusiasm from their affluent customer bases who seek sensory and emotional engagement rather than just performance or sustainability metrics.

Despite abandoning the electric Utopia project, Pagani continues to research electric vehicles. However, for now, they see no viable technology that aligns with their brand image. For Pagani, the 6.0-liter V12 Biturbo gasoline engine from AMG remains the heart of their vehicles.

This statement was made to the portal ItalPassion. The development of the electric Utopia was halted in 202x (year not specified in the text).

While the future of electric vehicles at Pagani remains uncertain, one thing is clear: the brand remains committed to its traditional V12 philosophy and the emotional connection it provides to its customers.
