EDM Council & OMG Merge to Form EDM Association, Aiming to Revolutionize Data Management

EDM Council has recently acquired the Object Management Group (OMG), leading to the formation of the EDM Association. This merger brings together a vast network of professionals and organizations, aiming to revolutionize data management and standards.

The EDM Association now represents over 30,000 professionals and boasts a portfolio of 700+ member organizations, eight regional hubs, and a rich history of 50 years in internationally adopted standards. The merger combines EDM's governance expertise with OMG's technical standards development, bringing together experts from various sectors such as financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, automotive, and defense.

The primary goal of the EDM Association is to make data 'truly portable, interoperable, and AI-ready' for organizations. By integrating OMG's standards adoption process, the association expects to accelerate adoption and ISO standardization. However, the consolidation also raises questions about standards diversity and innovation velocity.

While there's limited information about the specific tasks and organizations under the EDM Association, Chief Data Officers (CDOs) are encouraged to engage early with the merged organization. By doing so, they could potentially influence the evolution of these combined capabilities, streamline vendor relationships, reduce compliance complexity, and accelerate time-to-value on data initiatives.

The EDM Association, formed by the merger of EDM Council and the Object Management Group, is set to become the leading global community for data and standards. With its ambitious goals and diverse membership, the association promises to shape the future of data management, but its success will depend on early engagement and collaboration with industry professionals.
