ECHA Considers PFAS Restriction, Automotive Industry Seeks Exemption

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is considering a proposal to restrict the use of PFAS, a group of chemicals that includes fluoropolymers. The automotive industry, among others, uses these substances extensively. However, a joint statement from 15 organizations supports an exemption for fluoropolymer production and use, citing their crucial role in the digital and green transitions.

PFAS, including fluoropolymers, are used in various industrial applications, such as automotive components and electronics. The European Commission and ECHA are reviewing a restriction proposal that aims to regulate and further limit PFAS, aligning with the EU's Chemicals Strategy. However, the proposal does not currently recognize fluoropolymers as polymers of low concern, as defined by the OECD.

In January 2023, 15 organizations, including those primarily affected by PFAS production and use, such as chemical, plastics, and recycling industries, supported the PFAS restriction proposal. They argue that an exemption for fluoropolymer production and use is necessary, given the proper legislative framework for managing lifecycle emissions.

The ECHA is evaluating the PFAS restriction proposal, which could impact the use of fluoropolymers in various industries. The automotive sector and other affected industries have voiced their support for an exemption, citing the crucial role these substances play in the digital and green transitions. The final decision will consider the balance between environmental protection and industrial needs.
