Dubai implements dynamic toll pricing system aimed at enhancing traffic management

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has announced a significant change to the pricing model of Salik, the city's electronic toll system. Starting from 31st January 2025, Salik will introduce variable toll pricing across its network of toll gates.

The aim of this move is to enhance traffic management by adjusting toll rates based on demand, encouraging more efficient road usage. Under the new structure, peak-hour crossings between 6am and 10am and between 4pm and 8pm will be charged at AED 6, while off-peak hours, which run from 10am to 4pm and from 8pm to 1am, will continue to be charged at AED 4.

During Sundays (excluding public holidays and major events), a flat rate of AED 4 will apply throughout the day, except during late-night hours when tolls are not in effect. No charges will apply between 1am and 6am under the new variable pricing system.

During the holy month of Ramadan, the pricing schedule will be modified to reflect shifts in travel patterns. Peak hours during Ramadan will run from 9am to 5pm, during which crossings will be charged at AED 6. Off-peak hours during Ramadan will be between 7am and 9am and from 5pm to 2am, with a fee of AED 4. No charges will apply between 2am and 7am.

The Salik Company PJSC, which operates the Salik system, launched in 2007, confirmed that there will be no changes to the existing one-hour cap on consecutive charges for crossings at Al Safa North and South and Al Mamzar North and South toll gates in the same direction.

The Salik system, a tag-based system that aims to reduce congestion in Dubai, has been designed to operate automatically and efficiently. This change in pricing model is intended to improve congestion management and support Dubai's broader transport strategy.
