Dollar Tree Contemplates Expanding Rural Store Network by Over 3,000 Outlets

Dollar Tree, the American discount retailer, has unveiled a new concept store that merges its namesake and Family Dollar banners into a single format. This innovative approach is part of Dollar Tree's strategic plans to better position its brands and serve customers, particularly those in rural communities [1].

The combined store concept aims to leverage the strengths of both banners. Dollar Tree's single-price point focus will be complemented by Family Dollar's multi-price point model, creating a more versatile shopping experience with a broader product assortment across multiple price tiers [1][2]. This includes the introduction of the Dollar Tree Plus! initiative, which offers products priced at $1, $3, and $5 [2].

The new format is designed to increase access in small towns and rural communities that may not have large retailers. By unifying the two brands under one roof, Dollar Tree hopes to enhance convenience and provide a wider selection of goods in underserved areas [1][2].

However, in 2025, Dollar Tree sold the Family Dollar brand and store operations, indicating a strategic shift that may affect future expansion plans for these combined stores [3][4]. Despite this sale, prior expansion efforts were focused on rural and small-town markets to maximise store count and consumer access.

The combined Dollar Tree–Family Dollar store concept has been well-received. Comparable sales are up 20% on average at the new format stores, according to Dollar Tree [1]. Both the Family Dollar and Dollar Tree banner posted top-line sales growth in the previous fiscal year, which ended in January [1].

While the new format is a success, it has not been without controversy. Some communities have pushed back against Dollar Tree's expansion, stating that massive dollar retailers have muscled out local retailers and grocery stores [5].

In the fourth quarter, Family Dollar same-store sales were up 8.1%, while Dollar Tree's sales increased by 2.2% [6]. As Dollar Tree continues to expand its new concept store into a total of 3,000 stores at a minimum, it remains to be seen how the strategic shift in 2025 will impact the company's growth and its commitment to serving rural communities.
