Dollar General Promotes Steve Deckard to Executive Vice President of Store Operations and Development

Steve Deckard, a seasoned executive at Dollar General, has been promoted to the role of Executive Vice President (EVP) of Store Operations and Development, effective as of Saturday. Deckard's extensive knowledge of Dollar General's business and operations makes him uniquely qualified for this new position, which involves managing retail store performance, expansion strategies, and operational efficiencies to support Dollar General’s growth across its 20,000+ locations in 48 states.

In his most recent role, Deckard oversaw Dollar General’s operations team, which included its stores, Mi Súper Dollar General in Mexico, corporate store operations, asset protection, and real estate. Previously, he led Dollar General’s expansion into Mexico and oversaw initiatives such as Popshelf, as the company’s executive vice president of growth and emerging markets.

Todd Vasos, Dollar General's chief executive officer, stated that Deckard played a critical role in the strategic expansion into Mexico as the first international market. Deckard will now oversee Dollar General’s national store expansion, corporate-wide process improvements, and strategic initiatives.

Meanwhile, Tracey Herrmann has been promoted to executive vice president of store operations, effective as of Saturday.

In its latest earnings report, Dollar General reported a 5% increase in net sales year over year to $10.2 billion. Comparable sales saw a 1.3% bump compared to the year-ago quarter. However, net income fell 29% from last year to $196.5 million. The retailer also reached a critical milestone by opening its 20,000th store last year and plans to remodel 1,500 locations and relocate 85 stores.

The company has been making efforts to improve its supply chain by reducing its use of temporary warehouses and exiting four temporary warehouses. Dollar General previously left 11 temporary warehouse facilities. In addition, the company engaged in nearly 2,400 real estate projects.

Dollar General also appointed Tom Hutchins as its senior vice president of technology and Kevin Pinchon as its senior vice president of distribution in December.
