Natural Disasters Hammer Saxony-Anhalt with 240 Million Euros in Insurance Claims

Catastrophic destruction in Saxony-Anhalt: Nature racks up a staggering 2024 million euros in damages - Decision Already Taken on Implementation of the New Regulations

Vicious storms, hailstorms, and floods have taken a toll on Saxony-Anhalt, causing a whopping 240 million euros in damages in 2024. This disheartening sum comes from insured property and motor vehicle damages as reported by the CEO of the Association of German Insurers (GDV), Jörg Asmussen. The previous year, the tally was a less burdensome 118 million euros.

The grim details show that insured damages in property insurance, covering buildings, household contents, and commercial and industrial enterprises, amounted to 60 million euros last year. Out of these, an astonishing 15 million euros came from calamities caused by heavy rain or floods, with another 45 million euros attributed to storm and hail damages. Motor vehicle insurers shelled out 12 million euros for vehicles' natural hazard damages.

Across Germany, natural disasters led to astronomical damages last year, coming in at a staggering 5.7 billion euros according to the GDV. Almost half of this toll was shared by the two southern states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, which bore the brunt of last year's severe floods. The total damages likely surpass these figures, as not all damages are covered by insurance.

From Jörg Asmussen's perspective, the 5.7 billion euros in damages nationwide are alarmingly high and pinpoint the importance of climate change adaptation for the new federal government. "The numbers don't lie: it's high time we prioritize climate change adaptation," he stressed, urging for a comprehensive natural hazard approach that combines insurance solutions with preventive measures. Only then can we guarantee long-term security—for individuals and for municipal infrastructure.

Keeping Up with Climate Change Effects

As Saxony-Anhalt battles with increasingly frequent natural hazards, it's crucial to understand the reasons behind this escalation. Climate change has led to higher precipitation levels and potential flood risks across the country. This increased risk of extreme weather events has resulted in higher insurance claims[2].

Historical flood events like the ones in 2002 and 2013 have had a significant impact on German insurance claims, illustrating the vulnerability of regions like Saxony-Anhalt, especially along rivers such as the Elbe. The danger persists due to ongoing climate change, with insurance premiums and property values taking these risks into account. As a result, the financial impact of floods on insurance in Saxony-Anhalt is poised to continue growing[2].

The GDV Takes a Stand on Climate Change Adaptation

The Association of German Insurers (GDV) is actively engaged in addressing climate change impacts on the insurance sector:

  1. Risk Assessments: The GDV supports exhaustive risk assessments for insurers and property owners, providing data, and guidelines to help manage risks linked to floods and other extreme weather events.
  2. Adaptation Measures: The GDV champions climate adaptation measures, including infrastructure projects like flood protection systems, and risk management strategies, with the objective of reducing insurance claims arising from natural disasters and promoting resilience in affected regions.
  3. Policy Advocacy: The GDV is a vocal supporter of policy initiatives that strengthen climate resilience and encourage sustainable practices among insurers and property owners. These efforts aim to lessen the impact of natural disasters on the insurance industry and encourage long-term sustainability.

In summary, while specific data for Saxony-Anhalt isn't available, the broader context makes it clear that both the insurance sector and regions like Saxony-Anhalt face increasing challenges from floods due to climate change. Solutions need to revolve around adaptation, resilience, and sustainability to protect both people and infrastructure in the face of these escalating risks.

  1. The escalating insurance claims in EC countries, especially Saxony-Anhalt, highlight the urgent need for a comprehensive employment policy that addresses the challenges posed by climate change, including enhancing environmental science, promoting finance for climate change adaptation, and strengthening the insurance sector's resilience.
  2. In the light of Saxony-Anhalt bearing the brunt of frequent natural disasters due to climate change, it is crucial for the new federal government to prioritize employment policies that focus on scientific research in environmental science, finance for climate change adaptation initiatives, and implementation of climate adaptation measures to ensure the long-term security of individuals and municipal infrastructure.
