"Decathlon aims to surpass €5 billion in revenue by 2025: the sports retailer's recovery strategy"

Facing a Slump in 2024, Decathlon Gears Up for a Sales Surge in 2025

It's time for Decathlon to shake off the gloom of the previous year and focus on the fresh start ahead. With sales barely budging (+0.07% in France, a lackluster performance given the Olympic year's potential boost), a high-profile CEO departure, and its main competitor, Intersport, posting impressive gains - it's clear the sports giant needs a change. But fear not, says Bastien Grandgeorge, CEO of Decathlon France, "we're going to surpass 5 billion euros in sales in 2025" - a guarantee that customers are ready to flock back to the stores.

Early indicators seem to support him. "Since January, our sales have climbed 2.8%. And for our five flagship sports - outdoors, running, mobility, water, and fitness - we've seen a 7.2% increase in sales", the CEO gleefully shares.

A New Store Experience with Decathlon Running

Keen on attracting customers, Decathlon - with a staggering 28 million shoppers - is leaving no stone unturned. Following a €160 million investment in store renovation and opening four new stores in 2024, the plan is on the move once more in 2025 with another €130 million in the coffers. On the cards: a whopping 200 out of 320 French stores will get a facelift, and five new stores will grace our shopping centers. One of the interesting additions will be a new concept called Decathlon Running, soft launched on May 14 in the heart of Bordeaux (Gironde). This running temple offers sport enthusiasts a vast selection of items tailored to their needs - clothing, electronics, running shoes for both road and trail, and accessories. According to Bastien Grandgeorge, "we're both a generalist sports chain and a multispecialist. In this new store, we offer 400 items" - with plans to assess its success and explore potential expansions beyond this location.

Decathlon's Resurgence: Bouncing Back in France

Price Wars: Annual Sale Blowout

Another tactic to lure customers in? Price slashes. In 2024, Decathlon already knocked off prices on over 1,500 products, with an average drop of 10%. Take it up a notch this time around - 160 additional items join the list, including football gear, swimwear, and even an electric bike that now comes in below the €1,000 mark. "We sold 2,000 within 10 days. It's cheaper than a metro ticket to rent it for €1.50 per day!", explains Bastien Grandgeorge.

Will these moves be enough to maintain Decathlon's lead over Intersport (set to unveil its 2024 financial results in June) and contend with fast-growing Chinese fashion platforms like Shein and Temu? Only time will tell, but Decathlon's resurgence in France is shaping up to be a riveting spectacle.
