Cyclists involved in Bessung case to receive exoneration
In a bid to promote sustainable and safe mobility options, the Darmstadt City Council held a meeting on Wednesday, 22nd, to discuss improvements for cyclists on the Herdweg. The focus of the discussion was on widening the existing cycling path to accommodate more cyclists and enhance safety and comfort for two-wheelers.
The city is mindful of the concerns for both cyclists and drivers, and is considering adjustments to traffic flow and signage to ensure a balance between different modes of transport. The goal is to provide cyclists with unhindered passage by minimising stops and providing a suitable detour, avoiding the need to cycle on the main road.
The heavy traffic and lack of protection for cyclists on Heinrichstraße make it unattractive for two-wheelers. The alternative bicycle route on the Herdweg aims to provide cyclists with a detour to Heinrichstraße. However, the city has acknowledged that due to the narrow road width, a satisfactory bicycle infrastructure cannot be realised on the Herdweg.
CDU politician Paul-Georg Wandrey emphasised the need for a consistently planned bicycle route, stating that it is crucial for the balance between different modes of transport. He also announced that impacts on parked vehicles are foreseeable with the implementation of the bicycle route.
The Mobility Department will examine how to relieve bicycle traffic on the Herdweg. Intersections, traffic regulations, visibility, and parking spaces are the focus of the examination. The implementation of the bicycle route on the Herdweg will be linked to parking management in the Paulus quarter.
All traffic planning options contributing to traffic safety on the Herdweg and making it more attractive for cyclists are still being examined. The city council's measures for improving bicycle traffic on the Herdweg are part of its broader efforts to promote sustainable and safe mobility options. It is essential to note that the improvements should not affect car traffic and cause drivers to swerve.
The city council is exploring ways to address concerns from different industry sectors, including finance and transportation, in their plans to improve bicycle infrastructure on the Herdweg. This includes adjusting traffic flow, signage, and parking management in the Paulus quarter, as well as implementing the bicycle route without affecting car traffic and causing drivers to swerve.
CDU politician Paul-Georg Wandrey has emphasized the importance of a consistently planned bicycle route, not just on the Herdweg, but also extending to other areas of the city, to maintain a balance between different modes of transport, such as cycling and vehicle traffic.
