CSU's Plan to Link Quarters with the Historic Old Town
In the heart of Bavaria, the Christian Social Union (CSU) is pushing for the gradual integration and connection of Quarter G to Ingolstadt’s Old Town. This move aims to revitalise the area, making it a central hub for education, culture, and urban life.
The CSU's plan for integrating Quarter G involves the implementation of innovative traffic concepts aimed at improving safety and reducing conflicts among different road users. These concepts, inspired by urban planning trends and the CSU's typical policy interests, could include creating dedicated cycling lanes, enhancing pedestrian zones, implementing traffic calming measures, introducing smart traffic management systems, and incorporating shared space concepts.
The shared space concept, championed by CSU member Hans Achhammer, aims to make the traffic space equally accessible to all users. This design promotes interaction among road users, increasing safety for all, and reducing speed. For instance, measures were implemented under the shared space concept at the transition from THI to Paradeplatz in 2018, which included lowering Roßmuhlstraße, creating a pedestrian island, a stronger S-shaped road design, and a different visual surface.
However, while these measures were designed to slow down traffic and create a smoother transition for cyclists, there have been conflicts between different road users in the area. To address these issues, the CSU is considering additional measures such as adding grooves to the road surface at the beginning and end of the area to further calm traffic.
The CSU's goal of integrating Quarter G into the Old Town remains urgent due to the increasing number of THI students and employees, and the expected visitors from MKKD. It is also desirable to create a smooth transition from THI/MKKD over Roßmuhlstraße at low cost to strengthen bicycle traffic.
In an effort to further enhance the project, Achhammer has suggested including this initiative in the International Building Exhibition (IBA). This would bring additional resources and expertise to the table, potentially leading to a more comprehensive and effective solution.
