### Grocery Workers' Strike in Colorado Enters 18th Day

A strike by grocery workers, led by the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 (UFCW Local 7), against Safeway and its parent company, Albertsons, has entered its 18th day. The strike, which began in early June, has seen over 48 Safeway locations in Colorado go on strike, with more expected to join.

The strike was initially authorised by UFCW Local 7 workers in early June, with four Safeway locations in Estes Park, Fountain, and Pueblo joining, along with a distribution center in Denver. As of early July, the number of affected stores has grown significantly, with over 40 Safeway stores and the distribution center having workers on strike.

The strike is driven by demands for better pay and working conditions. The union accuses Safeway and Albertsons of offering wages below those of competitors and other local unions. Key issues include understaffing, changes to health benefits, and low wage increases.

Negotiations between the union and Safeway have broken down over disagreements on salaries. Despite Safeway's commitment to continue discussions, no agreement has been reached. The union has expressed concerns about alleged collusion between Safeway and Kroger during negotiations.

All Safeway stores in Colorado remain open despite the strike. However, the union has indicated that the strike could expand further if negotiations do not progress. The strike follows a previous two-week strike by King Soopers workers in February, which ended without a contract.

UFCW Local 7 represents 23,000 members in Colorado and Wyoming in grocery stores, packing houses, food processing plants, barbers and cosmetologists, cannabis, counselors and health care facilities, according to its website. The union has been providing updates on the strike through its social media and news releases.

The ongoing strike has impacted grocery workers in several Colorado cities, including Denver, Englewood, Evergreen, Lakewood, Golden, Aurora, Loveland, Broomfield, Estes Park, Longmont, Monument, Parker, Colorado Springs, Wheat Ridge, Highlands Ranch, Grand Junction, Lone Tree, Fort Collins, Boulder, Pueblo, Castle Rock, Fountain, Arvada, Fort Morgan, Greeley, Brighton, Conifer, and Littleton.

The union's key demands include better staffing levels, livable wages, and protection of workers' health and pension benefits. As the strike continues, both sides are under pressure to reach a resolution that meets the needs of the workers and ensures the continued operation of Safeway stores in Colorado.
