Construction projects during summer are proceeding smoothly as anticipated
In the heart of Duisburg, several road construction projects are underway, aiming to enhance the city's infrastructure and mobility. Here's a roundup of the latest developments:
Bike Lanes
A new bike lane has been installed on Karlstraße, between Stresemannplatz and Worringer Platz, in the direction of Worringer Platz. The right lane on Karlstraße has been removed to accommodate this new facility. Another gap in the city's bike lane network is being closed on the Franklin Bridge. Connections to Bagel, Moltke, Rethel, and Humboldt Streets will also become bike-friendly as part of the work on the Franklin Bridge.
Noise Reduction
To reduce noise, the South Ring Road between the Munich Street exit and Aachener Street in the direction of Neuss has been paved with a new, noise-optimized asphalt surface.
Bridge Maintenance
The corrosion protection on the underside of the Heinrich-Ehrhardt Bridge, which crosses over the Grashof Street, the Daimler AG plant, the Toulouser Allee, and the Deutsche Bahn AG tracks, is about 40 years old. To ensure the bridge's longevity, a section of the road will be completely closed for about eight weeks from August 23 for the work over Toulouser Allee.
The Rhine Knee Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge with two approximately 114-meter-high pylons, is undergoing a mandatory pylon inspection every six years according to DIN 1076. The inspection will be carried out over six days by rope access technicians, with the exact dates to be determined with about a week's notice due to extreme weather dependency.
Road Repairs
Ten streets will be repaired in part or in whole by mid-August. This includes street repairs in Liefergasse in the old town, which will begin on August 3 and continue until early September. Road repairs using a thin asphalt layer in the districts of Derendorf, Stockum, Unterrath, Mörsenbroich, Hubbelrath, and Lierenfeld are also on schedule and will be completed by mid-August. As part of the road surface renovation on Karlstraße, the lanes have been rearranged, and a secure bike lane has been created. The road renovation towards the city center on Bernburger Street is planned for next year.
Monitoring and Renewal
To ensure the bridge's longevity, a monitoring process is being carried out on the Theodor-Heuss Bridge. This involves measuring actual stresses on the underside of the bridge under defined loads. As a result of a recalculation, this monitoring process is being carried out. The flow measurement system in the Rhine River Tunnel needs to be renewed. For this purpose, 39 new flow measurement points with corresponding sensors and evaluation units will be installed. The Rhine River Tunnel will be closed for the renewal of the flow measurement from August 3 to September 25, on weeknights from Monday to Friday, from 9 pm to 5 am.
For the most current and detailed road construction updates specific to Duisburg's bike lanes, noise reduction efforts, or bridge maintenance, it is recommended to consult official local sources such as the City of Duisburg’s municipal website or transport department, as they typically publish real-time notifications about such works.
While this summer sees numerous cultural events and activities in Duisburg, such as the Stadtwerke Summer Cinema at Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord and family activities along the Ruhr industrial heritage route, these do not include construction updates. Similarly, railway construction updates are mentioned for other routes in Germany, but no direct references to road or bridge works in Duisburg are found.
The city's infrastructure development extends beyond road construction projects, as the finance industry has contributed to the funding of bike lane projects, such as the installation on Karlstraße and the closure of the Franklin Bridge gap. The enhancement of Duisburg's transportation system also includes the use of thin asphalt layer for road repairs in various districts, promoting smoother travel by cars and other vehicles.
