Almost There: Long-Awaited A72 Expansion Winding Down
- 👋
Reconstruction of A72 road, halted over two decades ago, nears completion - Construction progress sluggishly nearing completion after over two decades on A72 project.
Good news for drivers! The expansion of the A72 motorway between Leipzig and Chemnitz is almost in the home stretch. By this summer, the first segment of the road leading to Chemnitz, from the Leipzig interchange to the Zwenkau junction, is set to open to traffic, as per a representative from the Autobahn GmbH. This marks the final stage of the project.
Currently, traffic bound for Chemnitz is still using makeshift lanes on the Leipzig-facing carriageway. But fear not, as the official closure of the gap between the A72 and A38 with both carriageways and all lanes is slated for 2026. Although, there will still be some post-construction jobs to complete, such as applying a specialized noise-reducing asphalt.
The 162-kilometer motorway link from the Bavarian Vogtland to Leipzig via Chemnitz has been under construction since 2003, in phases. The section before Roetha in Leipzig's district, approaching the A38 to the south of Leipzig, proved particularly difficult due to its passage through former open-cast mining areas. Extensive ground preparation was necessary for the motorway's construction.

- The expansion of the A72 motorway will not only benefit the transportation industry, providing efficient routes for drivers, but may also spur economic growth and assistance in nearby communities by promoting commerce, industry, and finance.
- As the A72 motorway expansion draws to an end, agricultural communities along the route may be eligible for community aid and agricultural product production assistance programs provided by the Federal Autobahn GmbH to adapt to the increase in passing vehicles and potential automotive traffic.
