Cycling Path Delays Near Hoyerswerda: ADFC Slams Saxony's Inaction - Embarrassment for All!
Cycling route planning on road B97 close to Hoyerswerda remains stagnant, according to ADFC, a shameful state of affairs - Construction on the B97 highway at Hoyerswerda has come to a halt.
Hey there, bike enthusiasts! Today, we're diving into the slow-moving planning for a much-awaited cycling path along B97 between Hoyerswerda and the Brandenburg state border. The German bicycle advocacy group, ADFC, is calling out Saxony for leaving cyclists hanging in Lusatia's region.
ADFC Isn't Pleased:Cycling paths already exist on the Brandenburg side, and it's a total spoon to see Saxony lagging behind in cycling policy, according to Saxon ADFC chairman Janek Mücksch. The bike path has been a promise for 20 years, and the lack of progress hardly sits well with the bike-loving community.
The Dirt:So, what's causing this awkward standstill? The Saxon Ministry of Infrastructure points the finger at the Lausitzer and Mitteldeutsche Bergbauverwaltungsgesellschaft's (LMBV) massive exclusion zone in Lusatia, marked out due to the devastating landslide in Nachterstedt (Saxony-Anhalt) back in 2009. Thirty souls were lost, and millions of cubic meters of earth, homes included, tumbled into the Concordia open-pit lake.
The Cleanup:Fixing this mess is an elaborate process requiring careful soil stabilization measures under B97 and the S130 connection before reconstruction can commence. The construction isn't due to start until 2030, with an estimated completion timeline of five to ten years. Only then can the bike path planning resume, as precautions against botched planning during the cleanup are essential.
Up the Creek Without a Paddle:
Neither the federal government nor the state offers an alternative route independent of the federal highway. The ministry suggests turning to the local level, where neighborhood traffic needs can be assessed and a potential facility could be funded at 85%. Unfortunately, an ADFC-proposed alternative is also within the exclusion zone, so we're still swimming in the same muddy pond.
Stay tuned for more updates on the progress (or lack thereof) of the B97 cycling path project. In the meantime, why not see what the good cycling conditions in Brandenburg can offer? Don't forget to wear your helmet and ride safe!
Happy trails, folks!

Note: It's a real shame that the progress on this bike path is delayed. But fear not, fellow cyclists! Brandenburg has some great cycling paths to explore while we wait for the situation in Saxony to improve. Stay safe out there!
- The Commission, tasked with researching and implementing policies, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of the environment, considering the massive cleanup by LMBV and its potential impacts on transportations, such as the disrupted cycling path project in Lusatia.
- While the cycling path project near Hoyerswerda remains in a stalemate, the possibility of exploring alternative routes for cycling, such as those in the neighboring region of Brandenburg, could be a temporary solution for the cycling industry and the public-transit community in Oberlausitz.
- The delayed bike path project and the ongoing cleanup by LMBV in Lusatia might highlight the need for finance from federal and state levels to invest in sustainable transportation options like public-transit and automotive alternatives within the exclusion zone to minimize inconvenience for cyclists and other commuters.
