Gearing Up for a New Ride: BVG's Fresh Tram Depot in Treptow-Köpenick

Brace yourselves, Berliners! The beat of the city is set to pound harder with BVG introducing a brand-new tram depot in Treptow-Köpenick. The wonderful news is sweeping the district, with the local authorities and BVG sharing the excitement.

The shiny new location promises parking, maintenance, and repair facilities for an astounding 60 vehicles, providing the current tram network an additional operational base in the southeastern heart of the city. This leverages regular workshop visits more efficient, ensuring long-term dependability in operation.

The modern Flexity and Urbanliner vehicles are penciled in for service in Treptow-Köpenick, offering passengers a noticeably comfier ride with a spacious seating area. The upcoming depot will break ground in Adlershof – the first cutting-edge building in 40 years! After receiving the green light with the recent plan approval, the BVG can now dive headfirst into the project.

Berlin'sтурmay: Stalled Tram Expansion

Berlin's expansion plans for the tram network have hit a roadblock, with two projects axed, and no clear timeline for others. 30.05.2025, the Senate Administration leaves these in limbo, as commissioning dates are pushed further out.

As promised by the BVG, the new depot will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology, laying the foundation for a stable and sustainable transport network. With its modular and scalable design, it can bend and shape to Berlin's ever-changing local transit landscape, providing a robust starting point for future expansion of services.

Henrik Falk, BVG's big boss, talks about sustainability and adaptability: "With new requirements cropping up, we'll be able to respond swiftly and with confidence – whether by modifying existing facilities or expanding the infrastructure. The open design makes you-go-where-you-want a breeze, giving us a much-needed leg up for the future."

The new depot offers a breath of fresh air for the existing BVG depots by providing a roomy parking area and a bustling workshop. The enhanced capacities not only simplify maintenance for the already operating trams but also accommodate future demand for maintenance and secure parking for all incoming vehicles.

Spanning approximately 50,000 square meters, the depot site previously served as a coal yard, nestled charmingly between the S-Bahn track along the Adlergestell and an existing industrial district in Köpenicker Straße. Rebuilding and redesigning the tram track in Dörpfeldstraße will serve as the vital lifeline connecting the area to the tram network. The BVG aims to facilitate a two-track expansion, enhancing operational stability and making the street space more luminous and safe.

An example of eco-friendly urban planning, the BVG will mindfully relocate the wall lizards inhabiting the site to a spanking-new abode, with the positive folks already relocated. However, sustainability efforts don't end there – the installation of solar panels, green tracks, and innovative rainwater management systems ensure the depot sports a low carbon footprint. The depot will create roughly 400 new jobs, with an anticipated launch in 2030. Following the sanctioning decision, detailed planning for parking facilities, tracks, switches, and underground structures is now in full swing, with construction slated to commence in 2026.
