Construction agreement for Highway 413 underway announced by Premier; expected to reduce commuting times by 30 minutes

In a move aimed at boosting the economy and reducing gridlock, Premier Doug Ford announced the awarding of contracts for the construction of Highway 413 on August 28, 2025. The 52-kilometer highway will extend from Highway 401 in Mississauga to Highway 400 in Vaughan, with the route starting from the Highway 401 and 407 interchanges and heading towards the northeast.

The Highway 413 project is a contentious issue, with critics raising concerns about its cost, timeline, and environmental impact. Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria has declined to answer questions about the budget and time frame for completion, stating only that contracts have been tendered to accelerate the project. Details regarding the contracts, cost, and timeline for the completion of Highway 413 are yet to be revealed.

Premier Ford has stated that more details will be released in the next few days. In his initial announcement, Ford claimed that the Highway 413 project is essential to stand up to President Trump in the trade war with the United States, a claim that some consider a stretch.

The Green Party leader, Mike Schreiner, has criticized the project, stating it will not solve gridlock and is a waste of billions of taxpayer dollars. Liberal MPP Andrea Hazell echoed these concerns, expressing worry about the potential for the project to go over budget, like other major infrastructure projects under this government.

The construction of Highway 413 is expected to shorten travel times up to 30 minutes per trip. However, the project is not without controversy. Environmentalists have voiced concerns about the potential loss of farmland and risks to endangered species like the Redside Dace.

Meanwhile, Marit Stiles, the New Democrat Leader, suggested removing tolls from Highway 407, but Premier Doug Ford rejected this idea due to traffic jams on the provincially owned eastern leg of the highway. The identity of the entities that awarded the two contracts for the highway 413 construction work remains unclear.

As the details of the Highway 413 project unfold, it remains a topic of heated debate among Ontario's political leaders and citizens alike. With the promise of reduced travel times and potential economic benefits, the project is poised to significantly impact the province's infrastructure and daily life.
