Competition for architectural plans concludes: Proposed visions for the Parkhaus Mitte parking lot in Bremen revealed

In the heart of Bremen, a significant new development is set to redefine the cityscape. The upcoming project, slated for the former Parkhaus Mitte site, will be a multi-functional building that seamlessly integrates culture, gastronomy, housing, and retail.

An architectural competition launched in December of the previous year attracted several impressive entries. The jury, after careful consideration, selected two winning designs: one by the offices Hild and K from Munich and Felgendreher Olfs Köchling from Berlin.

The Hild and K design proposes a brick-like appearance for the new building, aiming to blend it harmoniously into its historic surroundings. The protruding upper floors offer residential space, while the courtyard provides access to publicly effective usage options.

On the other hand, the Felgendreher Olfs Köchling design envisions a vertical city quarter with diverse room offerings and qualities within the building complex. The lower floors are enclosed in glass, while wooden elements grace the upper residential floors, offering a striking contrast.

The upcoming tendering procedure will further develop these two designs, providing more details about their architectural concepts and integration into the urban context. Demolition work is expected to begin no earlier than the end of 2026.

Visualizations of the award-winning designs are available on the website www.binnenstadt.de. To gain a deeper understanding of the design choices and specific considerations made by Hild and K and Felgendreher Olfs Köchling, consult official project press releases or websites, Bremen city planning or architectural competition archives, or industry publications covering recent developments in Bremen.

A public information event on October 29 at 6 PM in the Forum of the Volkshochschule will discuss the competition results in more detail. This event offers an excellent opportunity for the public to engage with the project and understand how this new development will set decisive impulses for the transformation of the central inner-city quarter in 'Mitte Bremen'.

The winning design by Hild and K from Munich in the architectural competition for the Parkhaus Mitte site in Bremen incorporates residential space within the protruding upper floors, hinting at potential investment opportunities in real-estate within the redeveloped area. The Felgendreher Olfs Köchling design, in contrast, envisions a vertically structured city quarter offering diverse room options, which could lead to further investments in both real-estate and finance, especially in the retail and gastronomy sectors within this new development.
