Compact SUV Yuan Up introduced by BYD in Malaysia market
BYD's Atto 2 Electric SUV Makes Debut in Malaysia, Boosting Sales
In a significant move, Chinese automaker BYD Group has entered the Malaysian passenger vehicle market, introducing the Atto 2, a compact pure electric SUV (sport utility vehicle). The Atto 2, locally renamed from the Yuan Up, went on sale on July 24, making it the first market globally to receive the right-hand drive version of the Yuan Up.
BYD's foray into the Malaysian market has been met with success, as the company sold 382,585 new energy vehicles (NEVs) worldwide in June 2023, marking a 11.98% year-on-year increase and a 0.03% month-on-month increase. Remarkably, this growth also includes a 233.58% increase in overseas sales compared to the same month in the previous year.
The Atto 2 in Malaysia offers two range options: approximately 410 km or 430 km (NEDC) on a single charge, powered by BYD's Blade Battery technology with either a 32 kWh or 45.1 kWh battery capacity. The Malaysian version features a 174 hp (130 kW) electric motor producing 290 Nm torque, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in about 7.9 seconds.
Compared to the Chinese and European versions, the Malaysian Atto 2 differs primarily in battery size and possibly powertrain specs. The Chinese Yuan Up offers two battery packs, 32 kWh (range ~301 km CLTC) and 45.12 kWh (~401 km CLTC), with motors rated from 95 PS (70 kW) to 177 PS (130 kW). The European Atto 2 is available with a 45.12 kWh battery and WLTP range of about 312 km. In contrast, the Malaysian version boasts a larger 51.1 kWh battery, similar to the Australian variant, providing a longer driving range suited for local market demands.
The Atto 2 is available in a single Premium variant in Malaysia, with a starting price of 100,000 Malaysian Ringgit ($23,630). BYD has established over 40 sales outlets in Malaysia, ensuring easy access for potential customers.
BYD's success in the Malaysian market is not surprising, as the company has been the sales champion for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Malaysia for three consecutive years. The company's focus on providing vehicles with longer driving ranges, such as the Atto 2, is well-aligned with the demands of urban customers in Malaysia.
BYD's chairman has forecasted strong overseas sales for the year 2023, and with the successful launch of the Atto 2 in Malaysia, it seems that the company is well on its way to achieving this goal.
