CK Power & Bangkok Metro Pioneer Solar-Powered Mass Transit in Thailand
CK Power Public Company Limited (CK Power) and Bangkok Expressway and Metro PLC have joined forces to power two metro lines in Bangkok, the MRT Blue Line and the MRT Purple Line, using solar energy. This marks the first large-scale use of solar power for a Thai mass transit system.
The project, a global pioneer in decarbonizing public mass transportation, will see solar assets installed across six locations. These include the roofs of rail depots, car parks, and office buildings, covering a total area of over 106,000 m². The solar portfolio is expected to supply 452 GWh of solar power, equivalent to roughly 12% of the total anticipated consumption of the two metro lines combined over a 25-year period.
The initiative is expected to eliminate approximately 300,000 tons of carbon emissions during the project period. Both companies aim to reduce electricity consumption costs through this sustainable approach. The management of CK Power has committed to this project, demonstrating their dedication to clean energy sources for Thailand's transport infrastructure.
The collaboration between CK Power and Bangkok Expressway and Metro PLC is set to revolutionize the way public mass transportation is powered in Thailand. By harnessing the sun's energy, they aim to reduce costs and emissions, paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future for Bangkok's metro system.
