New CIPD Chair to Focus on Shaping Future of Work Amid AI Revolution

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has appointed Professor Christopher Bones as its new Chair of the Board of Trustees, effective immediately. Bones' strategy for the CIPD's future centers on shaping the future of work, with a strong emphasis on helping organizations adapt to the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on skills and job roles.

Chris Bones, an entrepreneur and co-founder of a digital company analyzing consumer insights, is no stranger to the evolving nature of work. He has won the UK Management Book of the Year for "The Cult of the Leader" and has a background in senior HR roles at Diageo and Cadbury, becoming a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD in 2002.

As the new Chair, Bones aims to build the confidence and capabilities of HR professionals so they can work at the core of business strategy while supporting workforce needs. A key part of his focus is ensuring AI is utilized responsibly and ethically, understanding how technology reshapes skills and roles rather than simply eliminating jobs.

Valerie Hughes D'Aeth, the outgoing CIPD Chair, has shown positive growth during her tenure, with the CIPD's membership growing to over 160,000 members internationally. Hughes D'Aeth has been a CIPD member for over 40 years and is stepping down to spend more time with her family. Chloe Smith, CIPD President, is grateful for Valerie's leadership and commitment as Chair since 2021.

Valerie Hughes D'Aeth has been instrumental in the CIPD's growing reach and influence across the profession and in the wider world of work. She leaves the organization in great hands, with Bones' strategic direction reflecting his background in HR leadership and academia. Bones was Dean of Henley Business School from 2004, becoming the first non-academic leader of the school.

The CIPD plays an important role in being a voice for the HR profession and its membership. As the new Chair, Bones will lead the CIPD's Board of Trustees in overseeing the strategic direction of the CIPD. He intends to guide the CIPD to lead in this evolving landscape, championing better work in the age of AI.

More information on the CIPD Board and its governance can be found on the CIPD's website. Bones recognizes this as an important and complex time for HR professionals, with both challenges and opportunities to improve work and working lives. He is determined to help HR professionals navigate this period and emerge stronger, ready to shape the future of work.
