Chevron Joins Race for Greek Deep-Sea Energy as PM Welcomes 'Geopolitical Upgrade'
Greece has taken a significant step in its energy sector by launching a tender for deep-sea exploration. Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou announced the bid, describing it as a new chapter for Greece's energy exploitation.
The tender, which closed on Wednesday at 5 p.m., has drawn interest from major players. US energy giant Chevron, in a joint bid with Greece's HelleniQ Energy, has submitted an application to explore four offshore blocks south of Crete and the Peloponnese. Chevron confirmed the bid, highlighting the region's strategic importance.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis welcomed Chevron's bid, calling it 'the best proof' of Greece's geopolitical upgrade. The Greek government views this project as a response to Turkey's maritime claims and a step towards energy self-sufficiency. It also sees the bid as strengthening its sovereign rights in disputed waters.
The joint bid from Chevron and HelleniQ Energy marks a significant development in Greece's energy sector. With bids now closed, the government awaits further evaluation. Prime Minister Mitsotakis plans to meet with US Interior Secretary Doug Bergman to discuss Greece's strategic role in the region.
